Multidisciplinary meetings bring together clinical staff to improve patient care

The Mário Penna Institute’s Medical Residency Committee (COREME) has been holding virtual Multidisciplinary Meetings with the aim of promoting discussions of clinical cases attended at the institution and, thus, providing the physicians with updates.

According to Dr. Ellias Lima, oncologist and Coordinator of COREME, the objective is to bring the clinical staff together, promote medical residency, plan treatments in a multidisciplinary way, update and promote knowledge. The meeting is online on a remote digital platform and involves resident physicians, assistant physicians and preceptors. They take place once a month, with educational support from the pharmaceutical industry.

The last meetings were on the following topics:

– 07/27: “Polytreated castration-resistant metastatic prostate cancer, state of the art in 2021, with the participation of Dr. Ellias Lima (Oncology Coordinator at IMP), Dr. Ana Carolina Pimenta (Oncologist at IMP) and Dr. Marta Rezende (Nuclear Physician at IMP). The meeting was supported by the Astrazeneca laboratory.

– 04/08: “Update on the treatment of advanced platinum sensitive ovarian cancer”, with the participation of Dr. Bárbara Marques (Clinical Oncologist at IMP), Dr. Suellen Peixoto (Gynecological Surgeon at IMP), Dr. Irsael Vilaça (Oncologist at IMP) and Dr. Oscar Araújo (Diagnostic Coordinator at Astrazeneca). Her meeting was supported by the Astrazeneca laboratory.

Instituto Mário Penna invests in the improvement of its clinical staff to increasingly provide a humanized, recognized and excellent service to its thousands of cancer patients.

Pastoral da Saúde distributes hygiene kits to IMP patients

Instituto Mário Penna has partners who enhance the work of our philanthropic and humanized work. The Pastoral da Saúde, led by President José Maurício Resende, is a great example of this. On July 16, during an action in partnership with the Humanization team, they gave a show of solidarity, distributing 100 hygiene kits to patients.

“Despite the pandemic and the care it requires, we don’t forget the patients here. We’ve been working for 35 years helping those in need and somehow we had to do something at that time. This delivery to do good is very rewarding”; emphasizes José Maurício.

Pastoral da Saúde is a great supporter of Instituto Mário Penna and is always present, offering assistance to those who need it when facing cancer, which is our specialty.

NEP: Would you like to volunteer in a clinical trial?

This question is usually asked by the clinical research team to patients at Instituto Mário Penna who can join clinical trials. But before hearing the answer, some explanations are essential.

A research volunteer, also known as a research participant, is a person who agrees to use a new drug that is in the testing phase and that may be beneficial for the treatment of cancer. The identification of potential volunteers is carried out by the team of oncologists who indicate those who can participate in the studies. For this invitation it is necessary to check three fundamental points:

1 – Does the test treatment provide more benefit than the standard treatment? In some situations, clinical studies offer medications that are not available in the SUS or in the health insurance, and that already show promising results compared to therapies used in routine, and that can increase lifespan or cause fewer side effects. In other situations, the patient has already gone through a long path of treatments and the therapy options have already been exhausted, leaving the oncologist to repeat a treatment that has already been done before. With clinical research it is possible to enable a new line of treatment.

2 – What happens when I participate in the clinical trial? The clinical study does not start before the patient is informed about the risks, benefits, follow-up tests, medications used, side effects, treatment time, consultations and all other information necessary to guarantee their right to make a decision. After clarification, a document called the Informed Consent Term (FICF) is signed by the patient and the physician responsible for the guidelines given. The term contains all the information discussed and the contacts of those responsible for the clinical protocol.

3 – Does the patient meet the study’s safety criteria? Before the clinical study arrives at Instituto Mário Penna, other analyzes are carried out regarding the drug, making it possible to know the main side effects it can cause, thus excluding patients who may have any risk factors for taking the medication. Several tests are performed between signing the consent form and before administering the first dose of medication, with the aim of getting to know the patient.

Cíntia Lima, Clinical Research Coordinator Nurse, emphasizes that a patient who is well informed about the possibilities of treatment in oncology will certainly have no difficulty in answering the question in the title of this text. She also reinforces that the mission of the clinical research team is to offer the best treatment to patients and ensure that their wishes are respected.

Solidarity clothesline: action distributes warm clothes to patients

Patients who arrived early at Instituto Mário Penna on August 6th were welcomed with a warm surprise: the Clothesline Solidarity. Pants, sweatshirt, and socks were hanging just inside the entrance. The rule was: take off your sweater and leave a message for the hospital staff.

The action was carried out with clothes donated by Instituto Galo. The Solidarity Clothesline was conceived and monitored by the Services Manager, Sérgio Lopes Magalhães, who insisted on taking care of all the details.

“I organized everything early. Our patients come from different cities and the day was quite cold. Their reaction to being greeted with warm clothes was surprising. Even in a mask, it was possible to see the smile in the eyes of each one of them. And they left messages thanking the hospital and the entire care team. It was exciting and very rewarding”.

September Yellow IMP warns of suicide prevention with “Every life matters” campaign

Yellow September is dedicated to suicide prevention. About 12 thousand suicides are registered every year in Brazil and more than 1 million worldwide. The Instituto Mário Penna’s campaign has as its theme: Listen. Chat. Help. Every life matters.

“In the last year, after the start of the Covid pandemic, due to the fear of the new and isolation, the losses in all areas and the deaths experienced, the number of mental illnesses increased and, consequently, the number of self-extermination attempts. Aware of this context, we thought of a campaign aimed at the eyes of our employees: an empathetic, non-judgmental and humanized look, where we will try to guide on how to identify risk and prevention factors, inform how to help a colleague or even a family member, where to seek help and engage everyone in this cause to reduce psychological distress and the suicide rate”; explains Gizelle Mesquita, Coordinator of Humanization and Hospital Psychology.

KNOW THE ALERT SIGNS AND KNOW HOW TO HELP

Intense sadness for several days

Lack of interest and future plans

Social isolation

Emotional fatigue, stress and anxiety levels

Previous attempts and family history of suicide

Warnings like “Life is not worth it”, “I’m so alone I want to die” or “You’ll miss me”

HOW CAN I HELP SOMEONE AT RISK?

  • Find an appropriate time and a quiet place to talk with this person.
  • Let her know you’re there to listen, listen with an open mind, and offer your support.
  • Encourage the person to seek help from mental health professionals. Offer to accompany her to an appointment.
  • If you think this person is in immediate danger, don’t leave them alone.
  • Be on the alert to monitor how the person is doing and maintain risky behavior.

During the month, several actions will be carried out by the Humanization sector. The program includes lectures, awareness blitz and live with experts. Every Friday of the month we will have “Yellow Day” and all employees must come dressed in yellow in support of the campaign. Do you work in uniform? No problem! Put on a prop and get creative! The important thing is to embrace the campaign and contribute, in some way, to help those who really need it.
