Mario Penna’s volunteers
A volunteer is a young person or adult who, due to their personal interest and civic spirit, dedicates part of their time, without any remuneration, to various forms of activities, organized or not, of social welfare, or other fields. ..” (United Nations Definition on Volunteering)
Mário Penna’s Volunteers began their work in 1974 through a group of women led by Tereza Simões, whose aim was to provide social support to needy patients at the Mario Penna Institute, dedicating themselves fully.
Today, the Mário Penna Volunteers have around 160 volunteers distributed across the Institute’s three units. These people serve around 400 snacks a day, visit beds and offer patients personal hygiene items, blankets, care and attention.
The Volunteers have two fixed bazaars, located at Hospital Mário Penna and Hospital Luxemburgo, and sponsor the Instituto Mário Penna’s Laryngectomized Patients Choir, providing the necessary prostheses and supplies for the group. In addition, they run outdoor bazaars to help raise funds for specific needs of the units.
Mário Penna’s Volunteers have two dressing rooms with wigs. It also offers medications necessary for post radiotherapy treatments, responsible for minimizing patient pain.

In 1986, at the request of Father Danilo Mamede (Our Lady Mother of the Church Parish/Vila Paris), Mrs. Waldete Feitosa, until then coordinator of the Parish prayer group, extended the invitation to the Monastery of Our Lady. Das Graças (Beneditinas) and began providing spiritual care to patients at the Instituto Mário Penna. Initially, eight people dedicated their time to take a weekly spiritual welcome to the bedridden.
Today the group has grown and has more than 160 people, including women and men who alternate their service in visits from Monday to Saturday, with masses on Fridays and Sundays, with confession, anointing of the sick, blessings and a word friend to those who ask, regardless of creed or religion.

Volunteer students serve snacks and carry out humane activities with the neediest patients served by SUS. In addition, they regularly support the campaigns carried out by the Mário Penn Institute

Since September 2015 it has been carrying out humanization actions within hospitals and providing support in various campaigns organized by Instituto Mário Penna.
