Instituto Mário Penna celebrates 50 years on June 28, with an impeccable trajectory in the relentless pursuit of saving lives and curing cancer patients. Comprised of the Mário Penna and Luxemburgo Hospitals, Beatriz Ferraz Support House, Education and Research Center (NEP) and Oncology Specialties Center (NEO), the institution performs more than 260,000 consultations per year, coming from more than 600 municipalities in Minas Gerais. The theme of this commemoration could not be different: “A story of hope”.
Classified by the Ministry of Health as a High Complexity Oncology Care Center (CACON), in 2020 the Institute also carried out 272 thousand radiotherapy applications, 34 thousand chemotherapy sessions, 55 bone marrow transplants and almost 11 thousand surgeries. In addition, it is at the forefront in the fight against Covid-19 and, for this, infirmary beds and other new ICU beds were created, aimed at treating patients with the disease.
“The moment today is one of thanks, especially to our employees, who are essential for every detail of this success story. I must also thank everyone who donates, our partners and those who, in some way, contribute to the growth of the Mário Penna Institute. We will always be available to society to better serve our patients”; highlights Marco Antônio Viana Leite, CEO of Instituto Mário Penna.
celebration
Despite the difficulties faced throughout the legacy of the Instituto Mário Penna, the moment deserves to be celebrated because the achievements have always prevailed. Due to the pandemic, the date will be celebrated without parties, but it will not go unnoticed. We will launch the “Memorial Mário Penna”, a space inside the Hospital Luxemburgo, where the history of the institution will be told on the walls and interactive totems for those who pass by. ECA (Culture and Art Space) produced a special commemorative video for the date, which will be posted on social media.
The “congratulations” will be at 5 pm, directly from the Mineirão Stadium, with a live show by singer Flávio Venturini , also produced in partnership with ECA. Everything will be broadcast live on Instituto Mário Penna’s social networks (Instagram and YouTube).

The story
The history of Instituto Mário Penna – named after the tireless doctor who became a pioneer in cancer treatment in Minas Gerais – begins in 1969, when Célia Janotti had the brilliant idea of helping cancer patients who were in a shelter located in Santa Efigênia district. She was the inspiration for Mário Penna’s work in the fight against cancer.
In 1971, the Associação dos Amigos do Hospital Mário Penna was created. The group has achieved several improvements for patients – the main one being the devolution of humanity in the treatment of the terminally ill.
Today, 50 years after the beginning of this trajectory, the Mário Penna Institute continues in the fight against cancer. With the help of collaborators, members of the clinical staff, volunteers, donors and partners, this story, which began with the careful eye of those who care for others, will continue to be written for many years.
