September Yellow IMP warns of suicide prevention with “Every life matters” campaign

Yellow September is dedicated to suicide prevention. About 12 thousand suicides are registered every year in Brazil and more than 1 million worldwide. The Instituto Mário Penna’s campaign has as its theme: Listen. Chat. Help. Every life matters.

“In the last year, after the start of the Covid pandemic, due to the fear of the new and isolation, the losses in all areas and the deaths experienced, the number of mental illnesses increased and, consequently, the number of self-extermination attempts. Aware of this context, we thought of a campaign aimed at the eyes of our employees: an empathetic, non-judgmental and humanized look, where we will try to guide on how to identify risk and prevention factors, inform how to help a colleague or even a family member, where to seek help and engage everyone in this cause to reduce psychological distress and the suicide rate”; explains Gizelle Mesquita, Coordinator of Humanization and Hospital Psychology.

KNOW THE ALERT SIGNS AND KNOW HOW TO HELP

Intense sadness for several days

Lack of interest and future plans

Social isolation

Emotional fatigue, stress and anxiety levels

Previous attempts and family history of suicide

Warnings like “Life is not worth it”, “I’m so alone I want to die” or “You’ll miss me”

HOW CAN I HELP SOMEONE AT RISK?

  • Find an appropriate time and a quiet place to talk with this person.
  • Let her know you’re there to listen, listen with an open mind, and offer your support.
  • Encourage the person to seek help from mental health professionals. Offer to accompany her to an appointment.
  • If you think this person is in immediate danger, don’t leave them alone.
  • Be on the alert to monitor how the person is doing and maintain risky behavior.

During the month, several actions will be carried out by the Humanization sector. The program includes lectures, awareness blitz and live with experts. Every Friday of the month we will have “Yellow Day” and all employees must come dressed in yellow in support of the campaign. Do you work in uniform? No problem! Put on a prop and get creative! The important thing is to embrace the campaign and contribute, in some way, to help those who really need it.

Multidisciplinary meetings bring together clinical staff to improve patient care

The Mário Penna Institute’s Medical Residency Committee (COREME) has been holding virtual Multidisciplinary Meetings with the aim of promoting discussions of clinical cases attended at the institution and, thus, providing the physicians with updates.

According to Dr. Ellias Lima, oncologist and Coordinator of COREME, the objective is to bring the clinical staff together, promote medical residency, plan treatments in a multidisciplinary way, update and promote knowledge.

The meeting is online on a remote digital platform and involves resident physicians, assistant physicians and preceptors. They take place monthly, with educational support from the pharmaceutical industry.

The last meeting was on the following topic:

– 08/24: “Neuroendocrine Tumors”, with the participation of Dr. Renata D´Alpino (Clinical Oncologist at the São Paulo Center of Oncology and Clinical Director of the Brazilian Group of Gastrointestinal Tumors), Dr. Henrique Lins (Oncologist at IMP), Dr. Adelanir Barroso (Nuclear Physician at IMP) and Dr. Mário de Carvalho Filho (Oncology Surgeon at IMP). The meeting was supported by IPSEN.

Instituto Mário Penna invests in the improvement of its clinical staff to increasingly provide a humanized, recognized and excellent service to its thousands of cancer patients.

September also marks the bowel cancer prevention campaign

Represented by the green ribbon, the month of September marks the Campaign for the Prevention of Bowel Cancer, also known as colon and rectal or colorectal cancer. This disease covers all tumors in the large intestine, rectum (immediately before the anus) and anus, and is the second type of cancer with the highest incidence in men and women in Brazil, according to the National Cancer Institute (INCA).

Bowel cancer is treatable through surgery and may later require chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Note that it is curable when diagnosed early. The main risk factors for the onset of this tumor are age equal to or greater than 50 years, excess body weight, a diet low in fiber and rich in processed meats, such as sausage, mortadella, ham and salami, for example, and excessive intake of red meat, above 500 grams of cooked meat per week.

The most common signs and symptoms that may indicate this disease are: blood in the stool, abdominal pain, weight loss, anemia and change in bowel habits, alternating periods of diarrhea and constipation. As these changes can indicate diseases other than bowel cancer, it is very important that they are investigated by a doctor, especially when they last longer than a week.

Stay tuned! This topic will also be addressed at Mário Penna Conecta on September 22 with Dr. Alice Capobiango.

Mário Penna Institute will have the first Tumor Biobank in operation in Minas Gerais

The Mário Penna Institute received authorization from the National Research Ethics Committee (CONEP) to implement the first Tumor Biobank in the State of Minas Gerais. It is the only one in a philanthropic hospital in the state that serves more than 80% of its patients through the SUS and will be operational from next year.

Dr. Letícia Braga, Coordinator of the Translational Research Laboratory of the Teaching and Research Nucleus (NEP), will be responsible for the activities at IMP. She explains that Biobanks consist of a sophisticated and well-organized system of programmed storage of biological material (blood, CSF, tumor and normal tissues) and corresponding data, which are accessible for scientific investigation and for the treatment of cancer.

“For implementation, we received financial support through the National Oncology Program (PRONON). Initially, Biobanco will provide samples of tumor and non-tumor tissue from the breast and ovary, including biomolecules such as DNA, RNA and protein. We will have the capacity to store patients’ biological materials through cryopreservation (-80ºC and -180ºC), in addition to our own system for storing the entire clinical and epidemiological history of patients, which will be integrated into the National Biobanks System”; account Dr. Leticia.

And what makes Instituto Mário Penna different from having a Biobank?

At Biobanco, samples are stored with quality allowing cellular, molecular or systemic studies, using different types of technologies, such as Liquid Biopsy, sequencing and Flow Cytometry, as well as having access to clinical data of patients with the response to treatment, recurrence , prognosis, among others.

“The biological samples stored at Biobanco will be available to researchers from the institution itself or to any other (national or international) that wants to establish partnerships/collaborations for research and development. With this, the Mário Penna Institute, in addition to being recognized for the excellent care of cancer patients, becomes one of the main actors in the generation of knowledge and products in oncology in the context of the SUS”; emphasizes Dr. Leticia.

Real Maternity: Mário Penna mothers get Lactation Room

Breastfeeding is one of the most sublime moments between mother and child and breast milk provides all the necessary vitamins and nutrients in the baby’s first months of life. Thinking about the well-being of both, in addition to complying with the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health, the Mário Penna Institute inaugurated, on August 31, a fully designed and adapted space so that breastfeeding employees can withdraw and store breast milk correctly and safely during the working period.

The inauguration of the Lactation Room is an institutional milestone, where we reinforce our humanized look at the collaborators, taking into account that 70% of our team is made up of women.

“The Lactation Room will provide for the removal of milk while the employee is at work. We know that the more you withdraw, the more you produce and, with that, the baby will breastfeed for a longer time. In this way, we can bring the mother the comfort of emptying the breast and feeding her child with her milk, something so important at this early stage of life”; highlights Gizelle Mesquita, Coordinator of Humanization and Hospital Psychology.

The Lactation Room is located in a reserved and comfortable space, inside the Living Space. The place has chairs, a fridge to store milk and a sink so that moms can perform the cleaning.

The mother who wants to use the space must get the key in the Humanization sector. We hope our collaborators make good use of it!
