IMP’s October Pink Campaign gains exhibition format at BH Shopping

The Pink October 2021 campaign is a milestone in this already traditional event for Instituto Mário Penna. In this edition, the proposal is for a more universal, diverse and inclusive campaign, which gives prominence to all women. In partnership with BH Shopping, an exhibition with photos of the campaign, with the theme “Prevention is of all colors” was launched on Piso Mariana, this Thursday, October 7th. The visitation is free, from Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 10 pm, and on Sundays, from 12 pm to 8 pm. Four models were clicked under the eyes of renowned photographer Márcio Rodrigues and the result of this unique work can be seen until the 31st of October.

When we say that prevention is of all colors and we give visibility to different aesthetic standards, we are not just embracing the cause of breast cancer, but a whole social issue. Resigning our views and questioning the constructed inequalities is urgent and everyone’s role.

Being a woman these days is increasingly challenging and we, Instituto Mário Penna and BH Shopping, have an important commitment to serving society.

NEP team conducts studies for new breast cancer diagnoses

The Instituto Mário Penna’s Pink October campaign also has important allies to help fight breast cancer. The Teaching and Research Nucleus (NEP) has a team of researchers who are looking for new ways to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, in addition to the imaging exams currently used. This group has been working to find a more accurate diagnosis.

One of the researches developed is part of Thayse Batista’s doctoral project, supervised by researchers Dr. Andréa Teixeira, from the René Rachou Research Institute – FioCruz Minas, and Dr. Letícia Braga, Coordinator of the Oncology Translational Research Laboratory at Instituto Mário Penna. The research assesses the profile of tumor microvesicles present in the blood of patients with breast cancer treated at Hospital Luxemburgo.

According to doctoral student Thayse, the goal is to develop a diagnosis using microvesicles, which are structures released by the tumor since its formation, when detection by imaging is still difficult, making this method more assertive and efficient in detecting the disease and in monitoring of the treatment.

She also explains that the microvesicles carry several characteristic molecules of the tumor, which allow the identification of its origin and communication with other organs. One of the functions of these microvesicles is to allow the tumor to grow and develop in other organs, causing metastasis, transforming it into a favorable environment for tumor growth.

“Our research results show that breast cancer patients have a higher number of microvesicles in their blood when compared to healthy donors. In addition, the profile of these vesicles is different on some occasions, as in the case of patients with metastasis who have a high number of T lymphocyte microvesicles, a cell type already known to be involved in the progression and response to cancer treatment”; explains Dr. Leticia.

The work developed has the collaboration of the clinical team of mastology and oncology, the NEP researchers and the patients who accept to participate. “This has made it possible to go even further in the search for personalized and quality treatment for everyone, following the motto of this year’s campaign at IMP. Knowing in depth how the tumor relates to the body is a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer and providing this type of personalized treatment for SUS patients is an advance in quality health care for all. ”.

Swiss investor bank representative visits IMP premises

Instituto Mário Penna is very proud of its history and of those who support this beautiful mission that for 50 years has been dedicated to saving lives. On October 19, an important partner was received at the institution by the Presidency and Board of Directors.

Karla Pimentel, Executive Director of the Swiss bank Arzan Suisse, visited the facilities of the Luxembourg Hospital and also visited the 50th Anniversary Memorial of the Instituto Mário Penna.

“Arzan Suisse is an investment bank headquartered in Dubai. They have a philanthropic work that they do with women, children and in the health field. When they learned about the history of the Mário Penna Institute, they soon became interested in getting to know it. We are very grateful to receive such an important visit. November Blue from Instituto Mário Penna arrives with the theme “Be whoever you want, but be warned”

The Mário Penna Institute’s November Blue comes with a light, fun and committed campaign to prevent prostate cancer, with the theme “Be whoever you want, but be prevented”. Even though this type of cancer is the second that kills the most in Brazil, some still insist on ignoring the risk of neglect, forgetfulness, prejudice and fear. Therefore, this year’s campaign aims to attract the attention of these people, using exactly the most common excuses for not taking the exam, such as “Is it worth it”, “I’ll go later”, “Not with me” and “This it’s nonsense”. With good humor and a hint of irony, Mário Penna is demolishing the myths about the exam and calling for prevention.

According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in its early stages, prostate cancer has a silent evolution. Many patients have no symptoms or, when they do, are similar to benign prostate growth, such as difficulty urinating; decreased stream of urine; need to urinate more often during the day and at night; and blood in the urine. In the advanced stage, this type of cancer can cause bone pain, urinary symptoms or, when more severe, generalized infection and kidney failure.

Early detection is a strategy to find the tumor at an early stage and thus provide a better chance of treatment. “Detection can be done through clinical and laboratory tests. In the case of prostate cancer, these tests are a digital rectal exam and a blood test to assess the dosage of PSA (prostate specific antigen)”; explains Dr. Alexandre Menezes, Urologist at Instituto Mário Penna.

Early diagnosis of this type of cancer enables better treatment results. “Men over 50 years old should see a urologist to do the preventive exam. It is important to emphasize that this guidance is valid from the age of 40 for those who have black skin or who have confirmed cases in the family”; says Dr. Alexandre Menezes.

Reference in cancer care by SUS in Minas Gerais, the Institute carried out, in the last year, more than 11 thousand urological procedures. In addition, 6,519 patients were seen by urology professionals and nearly 4,000 surgeries were performed.

Pink October: Interlaced women go to the field to watch the Rooster match

The Instituto Mário Penna partners are putting on a show in the Pink October actions. Last Sunday, October 24th, 9 patients who are part of Entrelaçadas (support group formed by women undergoing breast cancer treatment who share their experiences) were received at Galo’s official store and each one was given a gift by the sponsor Betano in an official team shirt.

And do not stop there. After wearing the shirt, one more joy. They were taken to watch the match between Atlético X Cuiabá and were received by the mascot Galo Doido and presented with flowers. Then, they were taken to the Betano box, where they watched everything in comfort and, most importantly, in complete safety.

This was another action by Instituto Mário Penna, Instituto Galo, Atlético and Betano, showing that the passion for football and prevention go hand in hand.
