NEP works with studies related to Precision Oncology

Precision Oncology, also known as personalized oncology, aims to combine clinicopathological data established for the patient with the molecular profile of tumors to create more accurate diagnostic, prognostic and treatment strategies tailored to the needs of each patient.

Dr. Letícia Braga, Coordinator of the Translational Research Laboratory at NEP, Precision Oncology treated the disease in a personalized way. “We, researchers at the Translational Research Laboratory, are working on projects funded by the National Oncology Program (PRONON) that seek to identify biomarkers that can be used in genetic testing, such as predictive markers for personalized treatment and markers that predispose to a particular type of cancer in families, helping physicians make more effective clinical decisions”.

Also according to Dr. Letícia, last year alone, 164 women with cervical cancer, 102 with ovarian cancer and 99 with breast cancer participated in the studies and contributed to achieving the goals of the NEP projects.

But while the results of this research are not available in clinical practice, what does Precision Oncology have to do with my cancer treatment?

“Precision Oncology represents the 4 P’s of medicine: Predictive, Preventive, Personalized and Participatory. Through this knowledge, physicians are able to guide interventions in the patient’s own daily life, change in lifestyle, exercise and eating habits, which directly depends on the specific attitudes of each one.”

Mário Penna Institute wins 50 years of history Memorial

Instituto Mário Penna celebrated its 50th anniversary on June 28, with special celebrations due to the pandemic. One of them was the launch of the Mário Penna Memorial, a space inside the Hospital Luxemburgo, where the history of the institution is told on the walls and interactive totems for those who pass by.

The launch of the Memorial took place on June 26 with the presence of board members, advisors and representatives of those who were part of the IMP. There were few people in person, following all the safety protocols required by health agencies. On the occasion, guests also watched the institutional video produced by ECA (Space of Culture and Art), especially for 50 years.

The history of Instituto Mário Penna – named after the tireless doctor who became a pioneer in cancer treatment in Minas Gerais – begins in 1969, when Célia Janotti had the brilliant idea of helping cancer patients who were in a shelter located in Santa Efigênia district. She was the inspiration for Mário Penna’s work in the fight against cancer.

In 1971, the Associação dos Amigos do Hospital Mário Penna was created. The group has achieved several improvements for patients – the main one being the devolution of humanity in the treatment of the terminally ill.

Today, 50 years after the beginning of this trajectory, the Mário Penna Institute continues in the fight against cancer. With the help of collaborators, members of the clinical staff, volunteers, donors and partners, this story, which began with the careful eye of those who care for others, will continue to be written for many years.

“The Memorial is an extremely important space where everything that has been done at the institution until today is registered. We have come a long way over these years and currently serve patients from more than 600 municipalities in Minas Gerais. Today we are writing this story, which will forever remain embedded in this space at the Hospital Luxemburgo”; emphasizes Marco Antônio.

Instituto Mário Penna pays tribute to FIEMG in gratitude for the partnership in the construction of beds in Covid

Instituto Mário Penna is very proud of its partners and makes a point of recognizing who is present in its mission, helping with the treatment of patients and contributing to the institution’s structural and technological improvements. At this time of pandemic, the Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais (FIEMG) spared no effort so that the institution could expand cancer care to also serve patients affected by Covid-19. To register this gratitude, a plaque was placed in the Espaço Benfeitoria Mário Penna – a wall with homage to donors and contributors who are part of the institution’s 50-year history.

This Monday, June 14, the president of FIEMG, Flávio Roscoe, was at Instituto Mário Penna to monitor the insertion of the plaque and the inauguration of the new CTI Covid facilities at Hospital Luxemburgo. In 2020, FIEMG donated R$ 4 million, which were invested in activating the José Rodrigo Machado Zica wing, at Hospital Mario Penna. This year, there were another R$ 866 thousand in CTI equipment.

Currently, the Instituto Mário Penna has 300 beds in total, 29 in the ICU and 60 in the infirmary. With this new FIEMG partnership, also involving other donors, it was possible to implement 9 more ICU beds and 20 in the infirmary.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the productive sector has been working to help mitigate its impacts on society. We understand that it was necessary to support the state’s health units, as we knew that there was not the necessary number of beds for the treatment of patients”, said Flávio Roscoe, president of FIEMG, thanking, on behalf of the entire industrial sector, the honor received. .

Also present and honored for supporting the Mário Penna Institute, Diego Andrade, Federal Deputy, Leader of the PSD National Bank, Majority Leader in the Federal Chamber and Active Member of the Parliamentary Front for Combating Cancer; Ciro Pereira, Councilor and President of the International Affairs Committee of the Municipality of Belo Horizonte; Laila Katina, Superintendent of Union Relations at FIEMG and Felipe Mota, Consul of Mexico.

Councilor Ciro Pereira thanked the opportunity to unite the two initiatives that made the beds viable. “When I looked for President Flávio Roscoe, he was ready to provide more structure to confront Covid, in which Mário Penna is the protagonist in the capital”. The councilor also spoke of the perspective of the Chamber approving amendments to the budgets to councilors and that he has already assumed that part of it will be allocated to the Institute.

“This partnership with FIEMG brings us even closer to society and our responsibilities as a philanthropic institution. We were only able to become one of the largest patient care hospitals with Covid because we had this important support. It is a very important moment in the history of Instituto Mário Penna and we just have to thank you for your trust and support in our work”; highlights Marco Antônio Viana Leite, CEO of Instituto Mário Penna.

NEP celebrates National Science Day and Researcher’s Day

National Science Day and Researcher Day are celebrated on July 8th. The date was created to highlight the importance of science for the country’s development, stimulate the interest of young people and disseminate scientific knowledge to society. Instituto Mário Penna has a Teaching and Research Nucleus (NEP) composed of a team of researchers dedicated exclusively to the development of scientific projects and clinical research applied to oncology.

The NEP was founded in 2015 with the purpose of acting in the investigation and production of scientific data. “Over the years, we have been generating knowledge and advances in the field of oncology, based on basic, translational and clinical research”; explains Dr. Paulo Guilherme, pathologist and Director of the Teaching and Research Center.

In Basic and Translational Research, the projects under development aim to identify cancer markers capable of offering a better quality of life to cancer patients, as well as supporting medical decisions. The research results should allow for an increasingly personalized medicine for the treatment of cancer patients. Currently, two projects approved by the National Oncology Care Program (Pronon) and dedicated to the research of biomarkers in female cancers (cervical, breast and ovarian cancer) and to the implementation of the first tumor bank in the State of Minas Gerais are underway. In addition, five doctoral and seven master’s projects are being developed, supervised by NEP researchers, in partnership with UFMG, UFU, Funed and Fio Cruz.

In Clinical Research, IMP researchers are currently working on three open studies for patient/volunteer recruitment: the Thor study for the treatment of bladder cancer and the Rigel and Kiniksa studies for the treatment of inpatients due to complications of cancer. Covid.

“In the coming months, we expect to open four more studies focusing on Covid’s treatment and another four to offer treatment for lung, cervical and bladder cancer”; emphasizes Dr. Paulo Guilherme.

Visit to the Senate guarantees investments for the Mário Penna Institute

Visit to the Senate guarantees investments for the Mário Penna Institute

Instituto Mário Penna is very proud of its partners and, as a Philanthropic Institution, it establishes fundamental cooperation with the Government to offer the best treatment to patients and achieve structural and technological improvements.
Yesterday in Brasília, the CEO of Instituto Mário Penna, Marco Antônio Viana Leite, received confirmation of investments via parliamentary amendments. The amount of R$4 million was confirmed in a visit to the President of the Congress, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco and by Senator Alexandre da Silveira.
In conversation with the parliamentarians, the manager presented the strategic recovery plan that has been executed since he took over the entity in 2019, overcoming major challenges and overcomes in this trajectory. The performance has been strongly based on the institutional strategic objectives in force, which are focused on assistance and economic-financial recovery, on the increase in production and hospital revenue, and on the renegotiation of outstanding debts – bank and with suppliers.
The senators showed recognition for the work Mário Penna, which completed 50 years in June 2021, being a true heritage of Minas Gerais and a reference in cancer care in the state. They were promptly sensitized to the demands presented for renovations and investment in new equipment. “Count on me and Senator Rodrigo Pacheco. The funding is being released to reinforce the service, especially for SUS users throughout the state who are served in Mário Penna”, said Senator Alexandre da Silveira, promising to return the visit soon, to closely monitor the application of resources.
