Real Maternity: Mário Penna mothers get Lactation Room

Breastfeeding is one of the most sublime moments between mother and child and breast milk provides all the necessary vitamins and nutrients in the baby’s first months of life. Thinking about the well-being of both, in addition to complying with the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health, the Mário Penna Institute inaugurated, on August 31, a fully designed and adapted space so that breastfeeding employees can withdraw and store breast milk correctly and safely during the working period.

The inauguration of the Lactation Room is an institutional milestone, where we reinforce our humanized look at the collaborators, taking into account that 70% of our team is made up of women.

“The Lactation Room will provide for the removal of milk while the employee is at work. We know that the more you withdraw, the more you produce and, with that, the baby will breastfeed for a longer time. In this way, we can bring the mother the comfort of emptying the breast and feeding her child with her milk, something so important at this early stage of life”; highlights Gizelle Mesquita, Coordinator of Humanization and Hospital Psychology.

The Lactation Room is located in a reserved and comfortable space, inside the Living Space. The place has chairs, a fridge to store milk and a sink so that moms can perform the cleaning.

The mother who wants to use the space must get the key in the Humanization sector. We hope our collaborators make good use of it!

Pink October from Instituto Mário Penna arrives with the theme “Prevention is of all colors”

This year’s Mário Penna Institute’s Pink October Campaign has the theme “Prevention is of all colors”. The association of the movement against breast cancer to the color pink brought significant gains to the campaign. However, since it was released, about 30 years ago, the world is no longer the same. Since then, there have been several other movements, other identities and other ways of perceiving oneself and the other. Therefore, Mário Penna created a more plural, more inclusive, more colorful campaign.

When we say that prevention is of all colors and we give visibility to different aesthetic standards, we are not just embracing the cause of breast cancer, but a whole social issue. Resigning our views and questioning the constructed inequalities is urgent and everyone’s role.

Being a woman these days is more and more challenging and we, who are now at the head of the Mário Penna Institute, are committed to the history of our founders to always be by the side of those who are often not remembered.

MAMMOGRAPHIES – According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), early diagnosis of breast cancer means a 95% chance of cure. Reaffirming its commitment to always taking care of society in the best possible way, in partnership with the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, the Institute is offering 2,000 free mammograms for women over 50 years old, who have not had the preventive exam in the last 12 months.

Scheduling must be made by calling 3349-1212, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm; and on Saturdays, from 7am to 6pm.

Employees of the institution who also belong to this age group may take the exam through the Unimed Plan, without co-payment.

According to Dr. Kerstin Kapp Rangel, coordinator of the Mário Penna Institute’s medical residency, mammography should be performed annually by women in the age group indicated by the Ministry of Health, the Brazilian Society of Mastology and the Brazilian Society of Radiology, in order to make the diagnosis of the disease possible. in its earliest stage. “Mammography is the only test capable of reducing mortality from breast cancer by approximately 30%, as it allows for earlier detection of the disease, before the appearance of palpable changes. Thus, a cure after proper treatment can be obtained in more than 90% of cases. Breast cancer screening consists of the association of annual clinical examination and mammography. The self-examination is capable of detecting tumors around 2.0 cm, but the disease needs to be diagnosed well before that”; explains.

According to INCA data, in 2020, approximately 67 thousand new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Brazil. It is the most common cancer in women (almost a third of all cases).

Breast cancer is also the neoplasm that most leads to deaths in Brazil, with 18,068 in 2020. In Minas Gerais alone, 8,250 breast cancer diagnoses are estimated for the year 2021.

The main signs of breast cancer that can be noticed by women are nodules in the breast and/or in the armpit, especially if they are unilateral and painless; change in the nipples (retraction, redness and desquamation), if unilateral; spontaneous discharge from the nipple, if unilateral, clear as water or bloody.

It is necessary to be aware of hereditary risk factors such as a history of breast and ovarian cancer in 1st degree relatives (mother, sister or daughter), especially when at a young age, as well as breast cancer in a male blood relative. Women with a hereditary risk profile should start screening earlier and using specific strategies.

Measures related to lifestyle habits can reduce the risk of breast cancer, helping to prevent: regular physical activity; healthy and balanced diet; maintain proper body weight; do not smoke;3 and avoid excessive alcoholic beverages.

Last year, even with the pandemic, almost 9,000 mammograms were performed at Instituto Mário Penna. In addition, more than 13,000 patients were seen by breast cancer specialists.

IMP nurse is honored after creating an app that calls for help for people with hearing impairment

The nurse and Coordinator of the Surgical Block of the Instituto Mário Penna, Éder Júlio Rocha de Almeida, received a tribute from the City Council of Betim for developing the application “Socorro pela Mãos” that connects deaf people to emergency services. Éder also received the award from the Regional Nursing Council COREN-MG and, also, first place in the award for theses and dissertations by the Council of Science and Technology in the health and accessibility segment.

According to Éder, who specializes in urgency and emergency care, the initiative took place in 2018, when he came across the story of a deaf boy who witnessed his father getting sick with many chest pains and was unable to call for help.

Therefore, in the master’s degree in technology applied to health, Eder conceived and developed the application that has a simple interface. “The program is easy to understand and, through icons present in it, the disabled are able to call for help”; explains.

The app can also be used by people who can’t read yet, as the icons are extremely intuitive. It is in the process of patenting and will be available soon for iOS and Android.

Éder also says that he is already negotiating with the head of government and the secretariat for people with disabilities, together with the first lady’s team and deputies so that the application can be implemented nationwide and free of charge. “Through the application it will be possible to give a voice to nearly 28 million hearing-impaired people who are unable to call the ambulance, police, firefighters and other emergency services that are currently only activated by telephone”; stands out. Finally, the professor stressed that several companies are already interested in investing in the platform.

Instituto Mário Penna also listens to the hearing-impaired – Instituto Mário Penna’s quality service must be accessible to everyone. Therefore, hearing patients can consult in any unit, with the certainty that they will be very well understood.

Through the Mário Penna Te Ouve Project , with a simple click, our doctors and nurses can communicate with deaf patients and family members through the intermediation of a virtual book interpreter, in real time.

All so that the deaf can talk about their symptoms and hear the doctor’s diagnoses and guidance without any communication problems.
