NEP: understand the relationship of mutations to cancer

Genetic mutations can lead to the development of cancer and research shows that 66% of those that cause tumors are random, only 29% are linked to environment or lifestyle and only 5% are linked to heredity. But, do you know what mutations are?

All living beings have genetic material that is responsible for generating the organism and keeping it functioning. This genetic material works like a code that needs to be read and interpreted whenever a biological activity is needed in this organism. Each species has a genetic code that is its own and that is the same among all individuals of that species. However, each individual has small differences that distinguish them from each other. It happens to all of us too. We have the same genetic code, but each has small differences that make us different even when compared to our brothers.

When our cells are going to multiply, whether to repair damaged tissue or to replace other cells, this genetic code needs to duplicate itself. This is important so that each new cell has the same genetic information as the one that originated it. During this duplication step, small errors can happen in the genetic code and they are called mutations.

Most mutations that occur are corrected or the cell is destroyed. However, some cells with mutations can remain in the body. Some of these mutations can bring advantages to living beings and this type of mutation is one of those responsible for the evolution of living beings, that is, they are legal. But some can be quite problematic and can cause serious problems, like those that trigger cancer.

Identifying these mutations is essential to understand the characteristics of the disease and propose increasingly individualized treatment methodologies, thus helping patients to have a more efficient response to available treatments and, consequently, to have a greater chance of cure. In addition, knowledge of mutations in tumors can also identify new types of treatment.

“Working at the frontier of knowledge and research on cancer and with the purpose of expanding this scientific knowledge, proposing solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients, researchers from the Translational Research Laboratory of the Teaching and Research Center (NEP), are developing studies to assess the burden of mutations present in patients with breast and ovarian cancer; says Dr. Fábio Queiroz, one of the Laboratory’s researchers. The methodology applied in these surveys was developed by Qiagen™, an internationally renowned company in the production of biotechnology inputs.

Multidisciplinary meetings bring together clinical staff to improve patient care

The Mário Penna Institute’s Medical Residency Committee (COREME) has been holding virtual Multidisciplinary Meetings with the aim of promoting discussions of clinical cases attended at the institution and, thus, providing the physicians with updates.

According to Dr. Ellias Lima, oncologist and Coordinator of COREME, the objective is to bring the clinical staff together, promote medical residency, plan treatments in a multidisciplinary way, update and promote knowledge. The meeting is online on a remote digital platform and involves resident physicians, assistant physicians and preceptors. They take place once a month, with educational support from the pharmaceutical industry.

The last meetings were on the following topics:

– 07/27: “Polytreated castration-resistant metastatic prostate cancer, state of the art in 2021, with the participation of Dr. Ellias Lima (Oncology Coordinator at IMP), Dr. Ana Carolina Pimenta (Oncologist at IMP) and Dr. Marta Rezende (Nuclear Physician at IMP). The meeting was supported by the Astrazeneca laboratory.

– 04/08: “Update on the treatment of advanced platinum sensitive ovarian cancer”, with the participation of Dr. Bárbara Marques (Clinical Oncologist at IMP), Dr. Suellen Peixoto (Gynecological Surgeon at IMP), Dr. Irsael Vilaça (Oncologist at IMP) and Dr. Oscar Araújo (Diagnostic Coordinator at Astrazeneca). Her meeting was supported by the Astrazeneca laboratory.

Instituto Mário Penna invests in the improvement of its clinical staff to increasingly provide a humanized, recognized and excellent service to its thousands of cancer patients.

A story of hope: Instituto Mário Penna celebrates 50 years

Instituto Mário Penna celebrates 50 years on June 28, with an impeccable trajectory in the relentless pursuit of saving lives and curing cancer patients. Comprised of the Mário Penna and Luxemburgo Hospitals, Beatriz Ferraz Support House, Education and Research Center (NEP) and Oncology Specialties Center (NEO), the institution performs more than 260,000 consultations per year, coming from more than 600 municipalities in Minas Gerais. The theme of this commemoration could not be different: “A story of hope”.

Classified by the Ministry of Health as a High Complexity Oncology Care Center (CACON), in 2020 the Institute also carried out 272 thousand radiotherapy applications, 34 thousand chemotherapy sessions, 55 bone marrow transplants and almost 11 thousand surgeries. In addition, it is at the forefront in the fight against Covid-19 and, for this, infirmary beds and other new ICU beds were created, aimed at treating patients with the disease.

“The moment today is one of thanks, especially to our employees, who are essential for every detail of this success story. I must also thank everyone who donates, our partners and those who, in some way, contribute to the growth of the Mário Penna Institute. We will always be available to society to better serve our patients”; highlights Marco Antônio Viana Leite, CEO of Instituto Mário Penna.

celebration

Despite the difficulties faced throughout the legacy of the Instituto Mário Penna, the moment deserves to be celebrated because the achievements have always prevailed. Due to the pandemic, the date will be celebrated without parties, but it will not go unnoticed. We will launch the “Memorial Mário Penna”, a space inside the Hospital Luxemburgo, where the history of the institution will be told on the walls and interactive totems for those who pass by. ECA (Culture and Art Space) produced a special commemorative video for the date, which will be posted on social media.

The “congratulations” will be at 5 pm, directly from the Mineirão Stadium, with a live show by singer Flávio Venturini , also produced in partnership with ECA. Everything will be broadcast live on Instituto Mário Penna’s social networks (Instagram and YouTube).

The story

The history of Instituto Mário Penna – named after the tireless doctor who became a pioneer in cancer treatment in Minas Gerais – begins in 1969, when Célia Janotti had the brilliant idea of helping cancer patients who were in a shelter located in Santa Efigênia district. She was the inspiration for Mário Penna’s work in the fight against cancer.

In 1971, the Associação dos Amigos do Hospital Mário Penna was created. The group has achieved several improvements for patients – the main one being the devolution of humanity in the treatment of the terminally ill.

Today, 50 years after the beginning of this trajectory, the Mário Penna Institute continues in the fight against cancer. With the help of collaborators, members of the clinical staff, volunteers, donors and partners, this story, which began with the careful eye of those who care for others, will continue to be written for many years.

Study by IMP professionals on efficiency in cancer treatment wins international publication

Studies related to cancer treatment always contribute to the prevention and search for a cure for the disease. Here at Instituto Mário Penna we have qualified professionals who favor the emergence of new treatments for cancer patients. Physicist Jony Marques and radioconologist Dr. Arnoldo Mafra, both from the IMP, were part of an important research for the treatment of cancer, which obtained an international publication.

This research aims to develop and characterize a platform for in vitro cell irradiation. “For the treatment of cancer, there are numerous proposals for new drugs to increase the efficiency of the combined treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Before submitting patients to new treatments, they are initially tested on human cancer cells in studies called in vitro”; clarifies Jony Marques.

Those responsible for the study explain that as it is an in vitro study, it presents some problems, such as the fact that the cells do not receive a uniform dose of radiation, with typical uncertainties in the order of 25% or more. As all biological phenomena are dependent on the radiation dose received by the cells, large uncertainties in the dose values cause a loss of correlation between the dose variable and the effects caused, generating false or not fully understood results.

“Thus, the innovative proposal of this work brings the design of an acrylic platform, irradiated with clinical brachytherapy (the same that treats the gynecological patients of the IMP) and which reduces typical uncertainties of 25% in the dose value to something between 2 and 7 %, still proposing a correction factor to accurately obtain the radiation dose received by the cells”; explain.

Arraiá Mário Penna has a fierce dispute and comes to the end with a taste of wanting more

One of the most enjoyable periods of the year is coming to an end and already leaving a taste of wanting more. São João in the pandemic was different, without parties, but we managed to make Arraiá Mário Penna happen in a very special way and with all the security that the moment requires. Each sector made its own decoration and the four that stood out were awarded, as follows: 1st place (Nutrition and Dietetics Service – SND); 2nd place (Chemotherapy); 3rd place (Radiotherapy), and 4th place (Controllership).

The dedication and commitment of all sectors were impeccable, which made the dispute even more fierce. There were little flags, balloons, typical games, gifts, scarecrow, cardboard city, small farm, garish, accordion player, square dance and even weddings. And patients were not left out. Each one, in their own way, participated in the bash. Some helped to make the decoration while undergoing a longer treatment, others were characterized in the beds, and there was even Rainha da Popcorn and Rei do Peanutim.

The typical foods were also successful. As there is no food available in certain areas of the hospital, the eating time took place in the permitted places, but with the presence of a collaborator from every corner. So, everyone was able to participate a little bit. It had everything: popcorn, green corn, hot dogs, broth, hominy, peanut butter, paçoca, mush, bread, peanuts, apple of love and other delicacies that just mention the water in your mouth.

Congratulations to all participants! You, without exception and, regardless of classification, gave a show of joy and lightened up such a difficult moment that we are facing with the pandemic.
